What is the Richter scale?
The scale was developed by an American scientist and physicist named Charles Francis Richter in 1935.
This scale measures the strength of an earthquake. It does that by monitoring the amplitude of the waves through a seismometer.
The scale goes up to 9.9 and includes 9 levels from microscopic to extremely strong. The microscopic level is essentially undetected, occurring millions of times each year, but a powerful earthquake has never been seen more than three times in a century.
The earthquake that occurred in Morocco had a magnitude of 6.8, classified as ‘strong’. The strongest earthquake ever recorded occurred in Chile in 1960, with an intensity of 9.6 on the Richter scale, causing an estimated 7.9 billion USD in damage.
