Beyoncé plans to direct a documentary about her own life. The singer and her representatives are reportedly peddling the project to movie studios, seeking partners for what would be her feature directorial debut.
For now, the film is just a proposal. According to the LA Times, Beyoncé and her agency, ICM, have been taking 20 minutes of footage around Hollywood – selling the idea of a music doc directed by its star, offering unprecedented access. The movie would reportedly mix concert footage with confessional interviews, but it is not clear whether the 30-year-old star plans to focus on her whole life or just a segment of it. The singer previously appeared in 2011’s TV documentary Beyoncé: Year of 4, which highlighted her most recent, fourth, studio album.
Although Beyoncé has never taken charge of a feature film, she co-directed a slew of music videos for her last record. Clips like Countdown, 1+1 and Why Don’t You Love Me were stylised and artful, with sometimes elaborate choreographies. The video for Party showed a much more naturalistic side: a gang of friends, enjoying themselves at a house party.
Beyoncé has also appeared on screen in several dramatic roles. She had an early co-starring role in the third Austin Powers movie, and later acted in Dreamgirls, Cadillac Records and Obsessed. The singer will voice Queen Tara in an upcoming 3D animated movie, Epic, and is attached to Clint Eastwood’s proposed remake of A Star Is Born.
Last year, the music doc Justin Bieber: Never Say Never grossed about $100m worldwide, making it one of the most successful documentaries of all time.
